Road Accident Compensation: how to get it

Posted on March 9th, 2011 No Comments

US Traffic Accident Injuries – Shocking FACTS

Looking at stats for US traffic accident injuries, it’s no wonder that so many people are seeking road accident compensation. In its Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD), the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) listed 30 countries.  Alarmingly, US traffic accident injuries and road death rates were high.  A whopping 11 states had a worse rate of recorded traffic accident fatalities, per member of the population, than the worst country listed out of the 30 member-countries.  Portugal came out as the IRTAD country with the most traffic accident injuries (resulting fatal) per capita.  Yet Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississipi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming all had worse road accident death rates per head of the state population than the West European country.

Accident Compensation Advice

It is recommended that following an accident, victims of traffic accident injuries obtain accident compensation advice from a qualified attorney, knowledgeable in traffic accident compensation law.  Filing for road accident compensation must be done usually within 3 years of the accident.  However minor or serious your traffic accident injuries, if you are able to prove your injuries then you have grounds for getting road accident compensation.  In addition, you can only be compensated if you can show that you were not responsible for causing the accident.  With an accident involving other road traffic, compensation will be difficult to claim if it’s found that you did not act accordingly.  Compensation is unlikely to be granted if for example, if you departed the scene immediately the accident happened.

Earlier this week, a NYPD police officer was charged in the hitting of a bicyclist and leaving the scene of the accident.

On June 14th, Officer Louis Ramos was driving his NYPD police vehicle when he hit a bicyclist.   Afterwards, he got out from the car and handed the bicyclist a tissue before leaving the scene of the accident.   Ramos and his partner never called an ambulance and never reported the incident.  However, nearby surveillance cameras caught the accident on tape.

The bicyclist suffered from cuts and a broken wrist after the accident.  Ramos has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, reckless driving, and assault.   Ramos and his parter have been suspended without pay since the accident.

May is National Bike Month

Posted on May 14th, 2010 No Comments

May is National Bike Month, a title meant to increase awareness to benefit bicycling safety on roads.

The Department of Transportation reports that due to increasing numbers of New York cyclists, the rate of bicycle-traffic accidents has actually decreased throughout the last decade. This is likely due to more cyclists equating to more public awareness of cycling safety.

New York City has worked to expand bike lanes recently in an effort to provide safer routes for cyclists through the city.

Despite these measures, there are still thousands of bicycle-traffic accidents every year in New York City. If you or someone you love has been invovled in a bike-traffic accident, contact the Brooklyn bicycle accident lawyers of Parker Waichman, LLP at 888-244-2273.
