Pedestrian killed in tragic accident

Police report that a crash between two SUVs on Tuesday morning resulted in a fatal pedestrian-car accident.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Slosson Avenue and Windsor Road after one of the drivers did not stop at a static red light. The crash pushed one of the SUVs over the curb and onto the sidewalk, where it struck a 59-year-old woman and her 3-year-old grandson.

Emergency responders rushed the woman to a local hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. According to medical personnel, the 3-year-old is in stable condition. Neither of the SUV drivers was injured.

A witness to the crash told local reports that the intersection is a hotspot for potential accidents. “It’s I-me-mine, me first, hurry up and wait. There’s no driver courtesy.” And the principal of Philip’s school confirmed, “At any given point of the day, it’s a very heavy area of traffic and people don’t pay attention to the light. They try to run the light.”

AARP campaign for safer streets begins

Posted on April 20th, 2010 No Comments

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) was aided by city officials yesterday in starting their week-long, statewide pedestrian safety campaign entitled “Complete Streets Week: Making NY Walkable for All Generations.”

Volunteers for the AARP are inspecting New York City intersections and grading their level of safety using a number of criteria. Whether the intersections have sufficient traffic signals, well-marked crosswalks, and well-timed light changes that provide enough time for pedestrians to cross are a few of the things that will be rated.

The AARP says that they will use the results of the inspection to lobby for new legislation and standards for road design that will accomodate “the needs of all people.”
